A native of Shahapur, Dr. Patil has spent over three decades treating patients from Karnataka's most underserved districts. This Foundation is his answer to a different kind of gap, turning a lifetime in oncology into a lasting ecosystem of care and learning for the communities he comes from.

To date, the Foundation's entire portfolio of on-ground work has been delivered through the Sri Basanagouda Mali Patil Ukkinal Charitable Trust, established in memory of Sri Basanagouda Mali Patil Ukkinal and founded by his son, Dr. Shekar Patil.

A centenarian, he was honoured at his centenary celebration in 2017 and died the following year. Since 2019 the Trust has marked his punyasmarane the way he would have chosen — by holding a free health camp on the day of his remembrance.

Programme 01 · Free Health Camps

Once a year, the hospital comes to the village.

A multi-specialty camp on open ground — outpatient consultation, eye surgery, diagnostics, medicines and specialist follow-up that continues long after the tents come down.

The camps begin with a blessing.

In this region a camp announced from a math's platform is attended; one announced by a poster is not. The seers of North Karnataka have opened these programmes, walked the grounds and asked their villages to come — and they came.

Programme 02 · Cancer Detection & Awareness

We did not stop at the village. We walked to every tanda.

Cancer is survivable when it is found early, and in rural North Karnataka it is almost never found early. So the screening went door to door — through the main village, and then out to the tandas and wards that outreach programmes usually drive past.

Awareness

The seven signs we taught in every house.

Screening reaches a village once a year. Knowing what to look for stays. In every settlement the team sat with families and taught the same seven signs — because a cancer caught at the first sign is a different illness from one caught at the last.

  • A sore in the mouth that does not heal

    Any ulcer inside the mouth still there after three weeks needs to be looked at.

  • A white or red patch in the mouth

    Especially in anyone who chews tobacco, gutka or areca nut.

  • Difficulty swallowing, or a changed voice

    A hoarseness or a lump in the throat that lasts more than three weeks.

  • A lump in the breast or the armpit

    Painless lumps are the ones most often ignored, and they matter most.

  • Bleeding that is not normal for you

    Between periods, after intercourse, or any bleeding after menopause.

  • Losing weight without trying

    Together with tiredness that rest does not fix.

  • A wound, mole or swelling that changes

    Anything that grows, bleeds or changes colour over weeks.

If you or someone in your family has any of these, do not wait for the next camp. Go to your nearest Primary Health Centre and ask to be checked. It costs nothing, and it is almost always something else — but it is the time you do not want to lose.

From the doorstep to the operating theatre

Finding it is only the first step.

A screening camp that ends at the diagnosis has not finished its work. Every suspected case is carried through the chain — and someone stays with the family the whole way.

  1. 01

    Screened at the doorstep

    The team sets up in the hamlet itself — under a tree, in a school verandah — so that no one has to find bus fare to be examined.

  2. 02

    Confirmed at Chamnal PHC

    Suspected cases go to the Primary Health Centre for confirmation and staging, with the Trust arranging the visit and the paperwork.

  3. 03

    Treated at HCG, Bengaluru

    Confirmed cancers are referred into specialist oncology care in Bengaluru and Kalaburagi, with travel, treatment and follow-up supported.

Programme 03 · HPV Vaccination

A cancer stopped before it begins.

Cervical cancer is one of the few cancers that can be prevented outright by a vaccine given in childhood. The Trust takes the HPV vaccine into government schools and vaccinates girls where they already are — in their own classrooms, at no cost to the family.

Coming back six months later for the second dose is the part most drives never complete — and the part that decides whether the vaccine works. Both doses were delivered.
